The Right Time To Change Unhealthy Habits

One of my favorite chapters in the Bible is Ecclesiastes 3, titled “A Time for Everything.” The first verse says it all, “[…] there is a time for everything and a season for every activity […]”. This wisdom also applies to when you change unhealthy habits. There is a season for that too!

Changing habits is not easy. It often requires much attention, effort, and energy to prepare, start and sustain new behavior. Habits are hardwired in the brain and change slowly. Therefore, it is wise to dedicate time to establish a successful foundation.

If you are currently running and gunning, it is probably not a good idea to start something new and consuming. Examples of inappropriate times to begin changing old habits include being tied up by a big work project, going through a relationship breakup, traveling for an extended time, studying for a major test, or grieving the loss of a loved one. You are more likely to rely on old automated habits during consuming times because they require less effort and are less confusing.

Before you start the change process, consider when your schedule will be less busy. Maybe, there is a long upcoming weekend, or perhaps you can take a couple of days off to add to a weekend. You may also be able to recruit help for regular tasks to free up some time. Utilizing social networks and technology can also provide relief.

The most amount of effort to adopt a new habit is often at the beginning. As time goes on, less time and effort are required to sustain new behavior. Therefore choosing an appropriate time to get started is wise. As it says in the Bible, “[…] run the race to win the prize […].”.
