Throughout my childhood, my mother gave me unconditional love, was my best cheerleader, and always believed in me. Now that I have kids of my own, I have a greater appreciation for the love and sacrifice that comes with raising children. Outside of the profound love my mother had for me, she imparted me with these three gifts that I believe contributed to all of the successes in my life.
#3 – Nutritional Education. As a child, my mother educated me about the nutrients in the foods I ate. She taught me about the vitamins in fruits, first-class and second-class proteins, carbohydrates, and more. Fast forward to my thirties and forties when I had to make shifts in my diet to tackle health challenges, I did not struggle to make those changes because it felt like I was going back to what I had learned from my mother. I have taught my children the importance of healthy eating just like my mom taught me. In a society where it is easy to eat unhealthy foods, sometimes without even realizing it, I am glad that my mom taught me how to eat healthy and that I can pass on that knowledge to my children.
#2 – Work Ethic. My mom is a trailblazer, even now in her older age. Her strong self-esteem and hard work have allowed her to achieve incredible goals and succeed in whatever she puts her mind towards. The work ethic she taught me helped me immigrate to the United States, overcome many obstacles in my new home country, and eventually become a middle-class citizen. I teach this model to my children to help them become the best version of themselves.
#1 – Christian Faith. My trust and faith in God were the best gifts that my mother gave me. In all of the challenges I have endured in my adult life, I have faced them with hope and persistence because of my faith in God, and He has never let me down. My mother has lived out her faith which has led her to raise and educate many children, and care for many others. As a single mom, she relied on God to provide for her family and her pot of oil never dried up. I have passed forward my Christian faith to my children because of the power faith has to guide your way, help you through challenges, and bring you joy.
So on this Mother’s Day, I want to thank my mother for these three awesome gifts she gave me, on top of the amazing love and care she provided. I love you, mom. Happy Mother’s Day!
