Improve Allergy Management with Lifestyle Medicine

If you’ve ever wondered why your allergy medication isn’t enough, you aren’t alone. True relief often requires looking beyond the pill bottle and toward our daily habits. Utilizing the six pillars of lifestyle medicine—nutrition, activity, sleep, stress management, social connection, and substance avoidance—can fundamentally change how your body responds to the environment. By strengthening these foundations, we can significantly decrease sensitivity to allergens and pave the way for a life with fewer prescriptions.

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology “allergies occur when your immune system reacts to an “allergen” — a usually harmless foreign substance such as dust, pollen, pet dander, or food.” This immune response triggers histamine release in the body which causes the mucous membranes to become inflamed in the nose, throat and eyes as the body tries to get rid of the allergen like a virus.

Lifestyle medicine practices help strengthen the immune system and reduce inflammation to help relieve allergies. Here are how the six pillars of lifestyle medicine can help:

1) Nutrition – Consuming more anti-inflammatory foods help reduce the irritating responses the body can have to allergens. On the contrary, eating inflammatory foods like processed foods and sugary foods can worsen allergies. Quercetin-rich foods and Vitamin C rich foods are examples of anti-inflammatory foods that help modulate the body’s response to allergens. Quercetin-rich foods include onions, apples and berries. Vitamin C rich foods include citrus fruits, bell peppers and broccoli.

2) Physical Activity – Regular exercise strengthens the immune system, helps control inflammation and increases circulation which helps flush allergens out of the body. It is best to exercise when pollen counts are lowest or immediately after it rains. On high-pollen or windy days, it is generally safer to exercise indoors. Also try to shower and change clothes immediately after outdoor exercise to remove lingering pollen from your skin and hair.

3) Sleep – Quality sleep aids immune recovery and regulation. Sleep deprivation is pro-inflammatory and can make allergy symptoms worse. Also, the body repairs tissues damaged by allergic inflammation during sleep. The sleep recommendation for most adults is 7 to 9 hours nightly.

4) Stress Management – High stress levels trigger inflammation which intensifies the body’s sensitivity and reaction to allergens. Chronic stress can also suppress the immune system making seasonal allergies worse for you. Stress coping techniques like mindfulness & meditation, journalling and yoga help the body become more resilient which helps relieve seasonal allergies.

5) Social Connections – Healthy relationships are linked to lower stress levels and stronger immunity which helps support the body during allergy season. Positive interactions release oxytocin, which counteracts the “fight-or-flight” response, lowers cortisol, and reduces systemic inflammation. Aim to participate in multiple and diverse meaningful groups and also make time to have social interactions frequently.

6) Avoidance of Risky Substances – Reducing intake of risky substances like tobacco smoke and alcohol decreases toxin load in the body which improves immunity and helps decrease inflammation. Lower toxins can decrease your body’s allergic load and increase your body’s allergen threshold.

Practicing lifestyle medicine does more than just foster a healthier body and a clear mind. By adopting healthy daily habits, you can reduce your dependency on medications and even find significant relief from seasonal allergies.
