In my coaching practice, I use the 6 Pillars of Lifestyle Medicine—the foundation for improving overall well-being, as well as helping to prevent and reverse chronic illnesses. But people often ask: “Does this help my brain too, or just my body?”
To answer that, we look to the work of Dr. Majid Fotuhi, a world-renowned neurologist and author of The Invincible Brain. Dr. Fotuhi identifies 5 Ways to Keep Your Brain Young, and it is no coincidence that they align perfectly with the Lifestyle Medicine framework.
Here is how the science of brain longevity lines up with lifestyle habits:
1. Physical Activity
Dr. Fotuhi’s View: He calls exercise the “fountain of youth” for the brain. Vigorous movement like brisk walking or biking increases the size of your hippocampus—the brain’s memory center—and triggers the release of BDNF, a “Miracle-Gro” for brain cells.
- Lifestyle Medicine Pillar: Physical Activity. We prioritize movement not just for weight or heart health, but also for brain health.
2. Brain-Healthy Nutrition
Dr. Fotuhi’s View: His rule is simple: “Don’t eat junk food”. He advocates for the Mediterranean diet, rich in omega-3s, leafy greens, and antioxidants that reduce inflammation in the brain.
- Lifestyle Medicine Pillar: Whole-Food, Plant-Predominant Nutrition. Reducing processed foods and added sugars is the primary therapeutic tool for good health.
3. Quality Sleep
Dr. Fotuhi’s View: Sleep is when your brain “consolidates memory” and clears out metabolic waste. He recommends a consistent 7-hour nightly routine for a healthy brain.
- Lifestyle Medicine Pillar: Restorative Sleep. Addressing sleep hygiene and disorders is a non-negotiable part of both lifestyle medicine and brain wellness.
4. Stress Management
Dr. Fotuhi’s View: Chronic stress floods the brain with cortisol, which is literally toxic to memory-related structures. He practices “intentional mornings”—using the first five minutes of the day for optimism and breathing rather than checking his phone.
- Lifestyle Medicine Pillar: Emotional Well-being & Stress Management. Techniques like meditation, deep breathing, and mindful routines are essential tools we use to lower that toxic cortisol load.
5. Mental Challenge
Dr. Fotuhi’s View: His final pillar is to “Challenge your brain”. He suggests novelty and variety—like learning to dance with a partner or playing games with family—to stay sharp.
- Lifestyle Medicine Pillar: Positive Social Connection & Avoidance of Risky Substances. Although Lifestyle Medicine does not have a Mental Challenge pillar sometimes Dr. Fotuhi emphasizes “Brain Training” through social engagement. In lifestyle medicine, we know that social isolation is as damaging as smoking, whereas strong connections foster cognitive resilience.
The Bottom Line
Dr. Fotuhi’s research shows that a 12-week multimodal lifestyle program can actually grow your brain and improve memory. By mastering these habits, you aren’t just “aging gracefully”—you are actively building a “brain buffer” against decline.
Are You Ready to Turn the Lifestyle Medicine Pillars into Your New Reality?
Understanding the science of brain health is the first step, but as many of us know, consistency is the real challenge. Between the demands of work, family, and the physical shifts of perimenopause or menopause, “just exercising more” or “eating better” can feel like another item on an already impossible to-do list.
That’s why I created the Make Healthy Habits Stick program.
This is not a “bootcamp” or a temporary fix. It is a Lifestyle Medicine-based habit program designed specifically for women in midlife who are ready to:
- Build sustainable healthy habits in a way that fits their lifestyle and preferences through personalization.
- Use evidence-based Lifestyle Medicine practices to improve well-being and proven neuroscience to make changes automatic.
- Address known culprits and uncover hidden blind spots that are preventing you from being consistent with healthy habits.
Your brain health is linked to your lifestyle habits. Let’s nurture and protect it together!
