Happy summer! Can you believe we are already halfway through 2026? July is the perfect time to pause and reflect on our New Year’s resolutions.
Take a deep breath. Let’s step away from the daily rush and check in on the intentions you set for yourself at the very beginning of the year.
Back in January, many of us committed to powerful New Year’s resolutions. Maybe you promised to eat better, manage your chronic stress, exercise regularly, or prioritize sleep.
Now that six months have passed, where do you stand? Wherever you are on your journey, I want you to hear this loud and clear: There is absolutely no room for guilt or judgment here.
As a Lifestyle Medicine Coach, I view health as a continuous journey, not a pass-fail exam. Let’s look at how you can navigate the rest of this year with confidence.
If You’ve Dropped the Ball… Pick It Back Up!
If your resolution fell off your radar by Valentine’s Day, you are not alone—and you haven’t failed. Life happens. Stress, busy schedules, and old habits have a way of taking over.
The good news? You don’t have to wait for next January to start feeling better. Today is a perfectly good day to hit the reset button. Forgive yourself for the lapse, reconnect with why that goal mattered to you in the first place, and make the choice to take one small step forward today.
If You’ve Made Progress… Keep Moving!
If you have maintained your consistency or even made small, steady progress—celebrate that! Seriously, give yourself credit. Building healthy habits in a fast-paced world takes immense dedication.
Now is the perfect time to lock in that progress and ask yourself: What is the next level? If you’ve successfully cut down on processed foods, maybe now you focus on increasing your whole grains. If you’ve mastered a baseline stress-management routine, maybe you focus on protecting your sleep schedule. Keep that momentum going!
Need a Strategy? Let’s Make It SMART
If you are struggling to make your goals stick, the issue usually isn’t your willpower—it’s your strategy. To build habits that last through December, try filtering your goals through the SMART framework:
- S – Specific: Instead of saying “I want to cut back on sugar,” try “I will read nutritional labels on my snacks to spot hidden sugars.”
- M – Measurable: Give your goal a number. “I will limit my added sugar to under 25 grams per day.”
- A – Achievable: Keep it realistic. If you currently eat processed foods daily, don’t try to go 100% whole-food overnight. Start with replacing one meal or snack a day.
- R – Relevant: Ensure this goal deeply aligns with your life. Reducing sodium or sugar is highly relevant if you are trying to lower your baseline stress and anxiety.
- T – Time-Bound: Set a clear timeline. “I will swap my morning refined pastries for whole-grain oatmeal four days a week for the next month.”
